Happy Sunday + Call Me Maybe

I think I put up about 5 minutes worth of resistance before giving in to the powers of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe. I first heard about this song on NPR a month ago when I saw the headline Dude Acts Like a Lady: Call Me Maybe Takes Over YouTube which I assumed was some sort of update on the Aerosmith song (the channels through which I consume music, e.g. NPR, mean it’s unlikely I hear/watch videos of American Top 40 songs). Boy was I wrong. The good folks at NPR reviewed various YouTube covers of Call Me Maybe and after putting up a little resistance I started bopping along (I admit the Justin Bieber & co lip-synching video played a huge role in this; those Disney kids know how to sell a song).  The Harvard baseball team’s cover is pretty awesome too. I’ve been hearing rumblings about a gnarly (in a good way) Barack-Obama cover, too, edited from various speeches.

The song is so bright and happy, I can’t help but feel happy when I hear it: one morning, on the way to buy my humongo-sized vat of morning caffeine before work, the song started playing over the PA at the mall and I immediately perked up. Call Me Maybe is my caffeine :)

Jimmy Fallon makes everything fun in a non-over the top way (I enjoy his brand of comedy and his Steve-Martin-like way of incorporating music in his comedy). His cover of Call Me Maybe, with The Roots and Carly Rae Jepsen herself, made my Sunday morning. The size of the smile on BlackThought’s face during the performance is further evidence of the pervasiveness of the force that is Call Me Maybe. I’ll just end by saying we need an Afrobeat cover! Which of the Afrobeats stars are up for it?!? :)
